In the beginning, this street used to go only until
Siqueira Campos
Street, then the Dr. Pereira Passos street was linked to her and later, in 1926,
was extended until Djalma Ulrich Street.
Cândido Barata Ribeiro, pediatrician, was born in March 11th, 1843
in Salvador, Bahia, son of José Maria Cândido Ribeiro and Mrs.
Veridiana Barata Ribeiro, (1843-1910).
He came to Rio de Janeiro in 1853 and enrolled in the
"Mosteiro de São Bento" (Saint Benedict
Monastery) where he studied the Preparatory Courses, living, by a
special concession, in a room of this Monastery some years. As a student
he taught Preparatory for a living. When he got all the needed Courses,
he enrolled in the "Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro" (Medical
College of Rio de Janeiro), where he graduated as a "Medical and
Surgical Sciences Doctor" in December 1867.
In his Medical Course, he was an intern of Surgical and Medical Clinic and the arranger
of the Anatomy Study of the College.
After graduated he moved to Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, being nominated the "Director of the Medical and Surgical Unit" of the Charity Hospital of the city, where he worked and inaugurated the school to poor children. In decree of January 10th,
1874, he was nominated "Commissioner of the Vaccines of the state of
São Paulo". Moving back to the capital of the Empire, he made a test
directed to mastership of the Medical College, being nominated
University Professor, in decree of March 25th, 1883.
He was a great defender of the Slavery Abolition and worked in the campaign that
installed the Republican Political System, as a fearless advertiser. With
the arrival of the political system he executed the function of "President of the City Council", in 1891 and was the first nominated to exert the position of Mayor of the Federal District, in December 1892.
Working in this position, he began some improvements in the city of Rio de Janeiro,
which owes him a lot, and where he left a wonderful and clever work.
Intransigent personality and unpolluted honesty, he was always a
considerable man, even by his opponents. In decree of October 23rd,
1893, he was nominated Minister of the Federal Supreme Tribunal,
filling the vacancy left with the death of the Baron of Sobral; going into
power in November 25th. Submitted to a nomination to the Senate, in
secret, in September 24th, 1894, the approval was denied disregarding
the qualification of "Remarkable Juridical Knowledge". After that,
